Rauner: Private Foundation Could Help Fairgrounds

SPRINGFIELD----Illinois' two fairgrounds are in need of $180 million in repairs and maintenance. Governor Bruce Rauner says, in the midst of the state budget impasse, a private foundation could help fund the repairs.

A report in the State Journal-Register says the proposal for a private foundation is at a standstill in the Illinois legislature. It is unclear if a foundation could be started without legislative approval.

States surrounding Illinois, including Iowa, Wisconsin, and Indiana, take different approaches to fair foundations. They include a blend of public and private funding. Minnesota and Wisconsin are able to put on their fairs without the help of state funding.
