Decatur officials to flush, test fire hydrants during April

DECATUR - The Decatur Fire Department is partnering with the Decatur Water Department to flush and flow test more than 1000 fire hydrants during the month of April.

The testing will affect 1275 fire hydrants within the city, with tests being held from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday during April.  Fire officials say this testing program is necessary to keep hydrants ready for service.

Officials also say residents may notice some temporary discoloration of water in areas being tested, and that there is no safety or health concerns for residents if water is discolored.  However, you should make sure the water is clear when doing laundry, as clothing could be stained from the discoloration.  If this happens, officials say you should rewash the wet clothing with a rust-removing compound, and to not bleach or dry the clothing, as this will set the stain.

A full list of areas being tested may be found here.  For more information, call the Decatur Fire Department at (217) 424-2811.
