Neighbors, environmental groups and others are planning to attend a meeting Thursday evening to discuss a proposed addition to Arch Coal's Viper Mine near Elkhart.
The meeting, which is part of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources permitting process, is being held at 5 p.m. at the Elkhart Christian Fellowship Center at 206 S. Gillett Street, neighbors said.
The mine addition would create a Coal Refuse Slurry Impoundment to store coal waste. Those who favor the project have said it could save about 300 jobs at the mine.
Some neighbors and environmental groups have expressed concern that the impoundment could hurt groundwater and that dust created in the dumping process could blow onto surrounding farms, hurting animal and human health.
