Jake Stanton (17) runs the bases following a game-tying 3-run homerun Thursday
DECATUR -- The Millikin baseball team brought some of their early season magic home Thursday, with a 7-6 win over Blackburn at Sunnyside Park.
The Big Blue (10-3) trailed Blackburn College 6-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, when the bats came alive against Beaver reliever Jake Lochhead.
Trailing since the third inning, the Big Blue got a pinch-hit, three-run homerun by sophomore catcher Jake Stanton, his third of the season, tying the game at 6-6.
Later in the 7th, Seth Coffey's base hit up the middle knocked in the go-ahead run.
Millikin faced one more obstacle in the top of the 8th, when the Beavers loaded the bases with one out. Ben Peters wiggled out of it, forcing a fielder's choice at home for the second out of the inning, then a routine grounder to short to end the threat. Peters earned his 5th save of the season pitching 1 2/3 innings.
Centennial High School alum Zak Owens earned his first win of the year, pitching just one inning of relief.
Millikin hits the road again Friday, beginning a two-day, three-game conference series at Wheaton College. First pitch in game one set set for 6pm.
