Meetings on U of I mascot scheduled

URBANA - If you'd like to get in your two cents worth on a mascot for University of Illinois, you'll have a chance.

Today and next Friday, the final two meetings of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Exploration of a University Mascot are scheduled at 5:00 PM.

This week's meeting will take place in Illini Room 104 of the Illini Union (1401 W. Green Street U). It will focus on the views of student-athletes, Marching Illini, and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Next week's session, in Room 314A at Illini Union, is for the general student body. Both meetings are open to the public and will begin with a public comment period.

The panel says it doesn't want to rehash the Chief Illiniwek debate or choose a mascot. They want to determine whether students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community feel the campus is ready for a mascot.
