Gas Tax goes into effect for Decatur

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR - A new gas tax is now in effect for the city of Decatur.

The tax is five cents per gallon for unleaded gasoline and one cent per gallon for diesel.

In essence, this means drivers will end up paying about a dollar more for every 20 gallons they purchase at the pump in Decatur.

City Manager Tim Gleason recently told WAND News he believes the city will collect an extra $250,000 to $300,000 a year per penny of tax collected.

The tax is designed to pay for repairs on secondary streets.
