Illinois Late Plate Fees Growing Without Reminders

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD----Since cash-strapped Illinois stopped mailing renewal reminders to motorists, late fee payments have surged.

Illinois motorists paid nearly $2 million in March for failing to renew vehicle plates on time. That brings the total amount for the state this year to $4.9 million. By comparison, Illinois collected $2.2 million during the first three months of 2015.

The Illinois Secretary of State's office provided the figures. Officials at that office stopped mailing renewal reminders in October in an effort to save an estimated $450,000 a month on postage during the state's budget gridlock.

Fines for late plate renewals are $20.00
