Mitchell: "Ground The Car Fleet"

Decatur – State Representative Bill Mitchell, (R) Forsyth is renewing his call for the state to park its fleet of cars and trucks.

Illinois self-insures its vehicles and without a state budget there is no appropriation to pay claims when there is an accident where the state vehicle is at fault.

“This is absolute insanity, craziness,” Mitchell told WAND’s Doug Wolfe.  “Ground the car fleet until we have a state budget.”

The state currently owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in claims dating back to last July first.  People who have a right to claims will have to wait until a new budget is in place to collect.

As we first reported on Wednesday, Mitchell sent letters to Central Management Services, which oversees the fleet, and to Governor Rauner.  Mitchell’s request would not apply to emergency vehicles like state police cars.
