Springfield Salvation Army to Move to Former Gold's Gym Location

Springfield - The Salvation Army of Springfield will be moving to a new building.  With the help of the City of Springfield, the location will be at 1600 E. Clear Lake Ave. in Springfield.  That’s what used to be Gold’s Gym.

The Salvation Army received approval for the move from its Board of Directors, the Illinois Territorial Headquarters in Chicago and from its regional Divisional Headquarters in Peoria.

At a news conference on Friday, April 1st, Major Steven Woodard said “After careful consideration of our organization’s vision and mission, including growth and expansion of our services to the Springfield residents, we felt this facility is best equipped to carry out this strategy from the locations proposed to the Army by the city.”

According to Major Woodard, “The new facility allows The Salvation Army to move its programs and services that are currently in transition, such as emergency services and shelter, to a possible future community center.”

The new move is hopeful that it will expedite the opening of the shelter for the Winter 2016. The project is contingent upon sale of The Salvation Army’s current property and the support from the City and the County.
