NS Seeks To Block Merger Talks With CP

Decatur – Norfolk Southern, which has major railroad operations in Decatur, is attempting to block merger talks with rival Canadian Pacific.

NS is asking shareholders to vote “no” on merger talks at its May 12th annual shareholders meeting according to published reports in the Virginian Pilot and the Wall Street Journal.  Canadian Pacific (CP) has made several takeover attempts since 2015.

NS has also sent letters to its employees urging a “no” vote ahead of the shareholders meeting.

Canadian Pacific made a roughly $30 billion takeover bid for NS in November.  NS rejected the offer as being “grossly inadequate.”

NS operates the largest non-hump rail yard in North America in Decatur and is a major employer in the city.
