SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Police Department says one person is dead after a Sunday night crash involving a vehicle and a freight train.

Springfield police say officers responded to 11th and Division Streets at about 11:14 p.m. for a report of a crash involving a train.  Upon arriving, officers say they found a vehicle that had been struck by a southwest-bound train.

The vehicle's sole occupant was taken to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead.  Springfield police have not received any reports of injuries to anyone aboard the train.

According to the initial investigation into the crash, witnesses told Springfield police that the vehicle traveled off the roadway and onto the tracks to the northeast of the intersection before it was struck.

Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards says the vehicle's occupant was identified at Linda Warmoth-Shelton, 65.  An autopsy is planned for Tuesday morning.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
