C-U Autism Network hosting Walk and Resource Fair in April

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN – In accordance with April being Autism Awareness Month, the Champaign-Urbana Autism Network will be hosting its 8th Annual Walk and Resource Fair on Sunday, April 24.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) report in March 2014, one in every 68 children born in the United States showed characteristics on the autism spectrum. In 2014, that rate had doubled from the one in 125 children in 2004’s report.

C-U Autism Network officials say they exist to serve families and professionals who need support and resources.

In following that mission, the group will be holding the 8th Annual Walk and Resource Fair on April 24 from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the Champaign County Fairgrounds.

Attendees can take part in games and bounce hoses, along with a safety fair featuring a fire truck, ambulance, police car and bomb squad display. The Illinois Wind Symphony will also be performing. Urbana Fire Division Chief and Fire Marshal Phil Edwards also plans to make an appearance.

More than 30 booths will also be set up to highlight organizations, such as Kevin Elliot Counseling and the Stephens Family YMCA.

Parkland occupational therapists will be on-site hosting a Quiet Room in Kessler Hall at the Champaign County Fairgrounds to give families a chance to take a break away from the action.

The event will be emceed by Diane Ducey with her 12-year-old Aidan Anderson, who has characteristics on the Autism Spectrum.

Funds raised by the Autism Walk support the network’s workshops that help foster knowledge and awareness of autism, and keep families connected with professionals, speakers and community projects that help them copes with issues related to autism. This walk is the only fundraiser that supports these free family events.

On-site registration for the event begins at 11:30 AM on April 24, with the walk kicking off around 2 PM at 1302 North Coler in Urbana. Anyone interested in pre-registering can do so online here.
