Decatur – State gas taxes could double under proposed legislation pending in the Illinois Senate.
The measure, Senate Bill 3279 (SB 3279), would increase the gas tax by 30 cents a gallon to 60 cents per gallon. It would give Illinois the highest gas tax in the nation. The gas tax in Pennsylvania is 50 cents a gallon.
The Metropolitan Planning Council, or MPC, unveiled a 10 year, $43 billion plan this week to fund roads, infrastructure, railways, public transportation and other large scale projects across Illinois. The higher gas taxes would help fund those projects.
The measure is pending in the State Senate Executive Committee.
