Durbin Urges Hearings On Supreme Court Nominee

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO---U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he met Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland Wednesday in Washington.

And Durbin says he is more convinced than ever that Garland is well qualified, and urged the Senate to hold hearings on Garland's nomination.

Garland is an Illinois native, and a circuit court judge. President Barack Obama nominated Garland to replace Antonin Scalia, who died February 13. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is saying there will be no hearings or votes on Garland's nomination. McConnell, a Republican, says voters should have a say in November before the vacancy is filled.

Garland also met Wednesday with Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois. Kirk says the Senate should hold hearings on Garland.
