Cost of postage stamps to decrease for first time in nearly a century

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK – The cost of a postage stamp will be decreasing from 49 cents to 47 cents starting this Sunday, April 10.

This is the first time there has been a decrease in the price of postage since July 1919, when stamp prices dropped from 3 cents to 2 cents. The last rate increase was in 2014 when stamps rose 3 cents from 46 cents to 49 cents.

That increase was meant to be temporary, which is why the price of stamps will be decreasing on Sunday.

The USPS said the decline in the cost of a postage stamp will cost it $2 billion this year.
