DECATUR -- 2016 Rio hopeful Lance Brooks competed in the discus competition at the Millikin Big Blue Invite Saturday.
It was the New Berlin native's first competitive event since tearing his pectoral muscle last year.
"This is my home opener," Brooks said. "I had two meets scheduled in Colorado. They got cancelled because of snow, so this is my first meet of the year."
Brooks took first in the event, with a top throw of 61.81 meters. Brooks knows it was an important first step in his road to Rio.
"Being injured last year I wanted to get an early start to the season, so this meet is relatively important to me. It's pretty much all business right now. It's one of those things where I'm looking forward to it, but also I've got to work out the nervousness, work out the jitters," Brooks said.
The Millikin alum has a busy spring ahead, as he tries to qualify for the Olympics for the 2nd time in his career.
"I'm going to try to get to Texas next weekend, throw in some warm weather, get into some wind. I've got a few meets lined up in California for May. The trials (I throw) July 7th and July 8th."
