Theatre 7 will return to Decatur Civic Center for 2016-17 Season

DECATUR – The Theatre 7 Board of Directors announced they have voted to move future Theatre 7 productions back into downtown Decatur at the Civic Center for its 2016-17 season.

Board President Robert Lowery says the board had been deliberating for several months before coming to this decision. For the past several years, the community theatre group has held its production at Richland Community College’s Shilling Auditorium.

Lowery says the group has been surveying members, inviting patron opinion via email, as well as through their social media outlets and web site, to gather opinions on the move.

“An overwhelming majority was in favor of moving back downtown,” Lowery explains.

Group officials say while they appreciate Shilling’s more intimate venue, downtown Decatur has become more “vibrant and viable in recent years.” Downtown Decatur’s bars and restaurants will be a welcome addition to patron’s pre and post-show activities.

The Civic Center also allows the group to take advantage of a fly loft, or scenery rigging system, which allow for set changes for more elaborate stage sets, and an orchestra pit.

These features will allow the group to produce a greater variety of plays and musicals.

Lowery adds that the people at Richland have been wonderful and that the group enjoyed performing there, but it was a difficult decision that had to be made. He hopes this move will lead to greater attendance, as well as additional support from the local community.

This move will allow patrons to purchase their tickets through the Civic Center Box Office, in addition to ordering online via the Theatre 7 website.
