IDOT, ISP kick off National Work Zone Awareness Week
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Tollway, and Illinois State Police are teaming up to raise awareness of construction zones and work during National Work Zone Awareness Week.
IDOT officials say the theme for this year's National Work Zone Awareness Week is "Don't Be That Driver." Motorists are being reminded that special attention should be paid when driving in and around highway construction sites, and that distracted drivers can be up to four times more likely to be involved in a crash.
ISP Director Leo Schmitz is urging drivers to slow down and give workers extra room when moving in and around construction zones. Additionally, IDOT officials say they are using "Smart Work Zones" again this year, which uses sensors to relay travel times to digital message boards placed ahead of construction zones.
Authorities say 46 people were killed in work zone crashes in 2015. For more information about work zone safety, click here.
