Champaign police make arrest in Sunday night armed robbery

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department says one man has been arrested in connection with an April 10 armed robbery.

Champaign police say officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 500 block of East Clark Street at about 10:33 p.m.  Upon arriving, officers spoke with the victim, who was allegedly approached by a person armed with a handgun who demanded money.  Police say the victim's cell phone was allegedly stolen in the encounter before the suspect ran from the scene.

Champaign police say they were able to apprehend the suspect in this incident, with the help of the University of Illinois Police Department and University of Illinois Student Patrol, after a short foot chase.

Authorities say the suspect was identified as Jordan Smith, 19.  Smith faces preliminary charges of armed robbery and defacing the identification marks of a firearm.
