Champaign police investigating Monday afternoon robbery

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department has announced officers have seized a handgun and made an arrest in an armed robbery that happened Monday afternoon.

Champaign police say officers were dispatched to a local hospital at about 2:55 p.m. to speak with the victim of an armed robbery.  Officers say the victim reported going to the 400 block of West Maple Street in Champaign in response to a Craigslist ad.

Police say the victim reported being confronted by a person armed with a handgun, who demanded the victim's money.  After receiving the victim's money, the victim was struck in the face by the gun, causing injury.

Champaign police say officers executed a search warrant at the home in the 400 block of West Maple later that evening, and that during the search, detectives allegedly found several pieces of evidence, including a loaded nine-millimeter handgun.

As a result of the investigation, Champaign police arrested Luther Kimes, 36.  Kimes faces a preliminary charge of armed robbery.
