Measure To Suspend Late License Fee Fines Advances

SPRINGFIELD----If you forget to send in your payment for license plate renewal in Illinois on time, you wouldn't have to worry if a new measure continues to advance at the Statehouse.

The Illinois House has passed legislation to suspend fines for drivers who are late in renewing their vehicle license plates. The bill advanced out of the Illinois house unanimously Tuesday, and now goes to the Illinois Senate for consideration.

The secretary of state ceased mailing renewal reminders to save money, while Illinois continues operating without a budget. The state has not had a budget since last July. Illinois has collected more than $5 million in fines since the beginning of the year. That is more than double the amount collected during the first three months of 2015.
