Champaign-Urbana Community Tries to Curb Gun Violence

Posted: Updated:

Champaign- After an increase of gun violence over the past year in the Champaign-Urbana area, community leaders are taking action to try and decrease the number of shootings.

The Champaign Community Coalition is a group of members ranging from police officers to school officials to park district members, as well as a variety of other community members. They hold monthly meetings to discuss issues in Champaign-Urbana. Recently, the issue of gun violence has been discussed heavily in these meetings.

In an effort to decrease the gun violence, the coalition began forming the CU Fresh Start Program. Fresh Start is a three-tier program that involves police officers, community voices and service providers.

Champaign-Urbana got the idea from a similar program in Peoria called "Don't Shoot".

The coalition is still meeting with various community groups to hear feedback on the program. They hope to have the program running as soon as possible.
