URBANA - Nathan Sitter, 24, of Savoy has been sentenced to six months in jail and probation for torturing his girlfriend's cat.

The cat later died.

According to our news partners at the Champaign News-Gazette, Sitter said in court that he is "very remorseful."

As WAND News reported in March, Sitter pleaded guilty to one count of animal torture. He admitted to dunking the cat under cold water and striking it with his fist.

Animal torture is considered a Class 3 felony; penalties range from probation to five years in prison.
