Judge: Hastert Support Letters Must Be Public

CHICAGO----A judge says former House Speaker Dennis Hastert must make letters supporting him public if he wants them included during his sentencing in his hush-money case.

Hastert is scheduled to be sentenced April 27. He pleaded guilty in 2015 to breaking federal banking laws. Prosecutors claim he paid to hide sexual abuse when he was a high school wrestling coach.

U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin is residing over Hastert's case. He said Thursday that the court will not include 60 support letters unless they are publicly filed. The letters were attached to a sealed filing.

Prosecutors have not asked for a specific sentence for Hastert, 74. His attorneys have requested probation. Judge Durkin could impose the maximum penalty of five years in prison.
