Haines and Essick Going Out of Business

Posted: Updated:

Longtime Decatur department store Haines and Essick is going out of business, store management announced Friday.

The business has been in Decatur for 114 years, most of them at the corner of North Main Street and William Street, said store manager Sue Miller.

“All things have their time,” Miller said. “It’s very sad, and I know everybody’s very sad about it.”

Miller said there were several reasons for the decision to close.

“Downtown is thriving … we love downtown,” Miller said, “It’s just … it was our time. It’s a hard model to have a big retail store. It’s a lot of staff, it’s a lot of expense, and it’s an old building.”

The building’s owners want to lease the space and may divide the building to house several businesses, Miller said, adding that the owners have been in contact with the City of Decatur about their plans.

Miller said the store plans to have a closing sale, and she said the dates for that sale should be announced soon.
