IDOT, ISP reminding motorcyclists to "Gear Up - Ride Smart"

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Transportation is teaming up with the Illinois State Police to remind motorcyclists to take necessary steps to ensure their safety as part of the "Gear Up - Ride Smart" initiative.

IDOT officials say motorcyclists are being encouraged to conduct a pre-ride safety inspection of their bike, as well as wearing high-visibility clothing, eye protection, gloves, jackets, pants, boots, and a U.S. DOT-approved helmet.

Additionally, motorcyclists are encouraged to take a motorcycle training class to refresh their riding skills, and may do so for free through the state's Cycle Rider Safety Training Program.  ISP officials also say motorcyclists should not drink and ride, as they could face large fines, jail time, and suspension of driving privileges.
