Illinois Legislation Requires Animal Adoption Over Research

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD----Some four-legged visitors came to the Illinois Statehouse Tuesday to make the case for a legislative measure.

The Illinois legislation would require research dogs and cats an option to get adopted instead. Beagles that have been rescued by the Beagle Freedom Project appeared with their rescuers. They support legislation that would require laboratories, specifically at universities and other tax-supported facilities, to work with organizations to give animals a chance to get adopted instead of getting euthanized.

Beagles are often used in research because they are both docile and small.

The legislation was introduced in bipartisan fashion by Republican Representative Margo McDermed of Mokena and Democratic Senator Linda Holmes of Aurora. The plan has no enforcement mechanism. Supporters say it would rely on labs to identify healthy animals eligible for new homes. The bills are HB4297 and SB2356.
