Daily Fantasy Sports Bill Advances In Illinois

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD----A bill that would make gambling with online daily fantasy sports in Illinois legal cleared its first hurdle Wednesday in the statehouse.

The measure passed a House committee 9 to 4. It seeks to regulate how the online businesses operate; the bill would forbid company employees and anyone under age 21 from taking part.

There are some concerns about whether the measure includes enough safeguards to prevent minors from playing. The Illinois Gaming Board would oversee the contests. Operators who violate the law would face fines, and would pay licensing fees based on revenue.

Online daily fantasy sports companies DraftKings and Fan Duel have been pushing for regulation in Illinois and other states. In a December opinion, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the games are illegal.
