EFFINGHAM COUNTY – Illinois State Troopers were on the scene of a crash in Effingham County early Sunday morning that left one man dead.

Authorities responded to the crash on Illinois Route 37, a half-mile north of Mason, at 6:15 AM on Sunday, April 24.

Their preliminary investigation indicates a Chevrolet pickup was heading south on Route 37 by Effingham County Road 400 North. The report says the area was very foggy at the time of the crash. The pickup drifted across the center line and struck the driver’s side of a Ford utility (bucket lift) pickup traveling in the opposite direction.

After hitting the Ford, the Chevrolet pickup spun out and came to a rest facing north in the northbound lane of Route 37. The Ford pickup went off the road after being hit and went into the east ditch.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup, identified as Jason Hazzard, of Edgewood, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.  The driver of the utility pickup was uninjured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

This crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Effingham County Coroner’s Office.
