Decatur Public Schools to Accommodate Transgender Student

Posted: Updated:

DECATUR, IL - Decatur Public Schools says it is making accommodations for a transgender elementary school student. Parents were notified last week.

A spokesperson for Decatur Public Schools says the student goes to Baum Elementary School - but said they would not comment further.

A LGBT support center in Springfield says it's important for parents to know how to talk to their children.

"Parents need to talk to their kids about being understanding; and until you have been in that person's shoes - you couldn't possibly understand what they're going through" says Phoenix Center Executive Director Jonna Cooley.

Cooley describes a transgendered person as someone who's anatomy does not match what is in their heads or hearts.

"You know sometimes people are in the wrong body and they feel like they're trapped in the wrong body and that to be happy and healthy they need to be their authentic self."
