Champaign-Urbana-Savoy area to celebrate Bike Month in May

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY – Bike events are planned throughout the month of May for riders of all experience levels in the greater Champaign-Urbana-Savoy area.

May 2016 marks the seventh annual CU Bike Month, which is coordinated by Champaign County Bikes and organized by a multi-agency CU Bike Month Planning Team. The team hosts a number of events and promotes bike activities of other organizations in the community.

These activities are meant for anyone from new riders to those who use their bikes for their shopping commute.

The CU Bike website has the full calendar of May events, as well as links to register for the various activities.

A few of these events include:

  • Bike to Work Day: Bike month’s signature event that will take place on Tuesday, May 3, so that University and Parkland College communities can participate. Welcoming activities will take place in downtown Champaign, downtown Urbana, East Urbana, at the University Research Park, Wolfram Research and on the University of Illinois campus. Snacks and other treats will be donated by various sponsors.
  • National Bike to School Day: This will take place on Wednesday, May 4. It is sponsored by the CU-Safe Routes to School Project (SRTS) and Champaign County Bikes (CCB). Several schools in Champaign-Urbana fully participate and plan a special welcome to students who ride bicycles to school. SRTS and CCB volunteers will be stationed at those schools to welcome students.
  • (NEW) Pump You Up In The Park: This will happen on Sunday, May 1, and is an effort to encourage families and cyclists of all ages to get their bikes out of winter storage and perform maintenance on them, by inflating tires and adjusting seats. Volunteers will be performing these repairs while also doing a quick safety check.

The month also supports the National Bike Challenge, and more information on that can be found here.
