Report: IL leads in clean energy jobs

Illinois leads Midwestern states in clean energy jobs, according to a report released this month.

The Clean Jobs Midwest survey reports Illinois the number of clean energy jobs grew by 9 percent in 2015, 1.5 percent higher growth than projected. At the same time, the report projects Illinois’ clean energy sector will grow at a slower rate of 5.3 percent in the next twelve months.

At Richland Community College, academic leaders have worked to prepare students for a wide variety of clean energy jobs in recent years, adding a renewable energy specialty program and including clean energy components to other programs, said Douglas Brauer, the college’s Vice President for Economic Development and Innovative Workforce Solutions.

“One of the key things we’ve been able to do is, by integrating these new technologies within existing programs, that enables students to be able to be aware of a technology, to have exposure to a technology, but to have very portable skills,” Brauer said. “As an industry goes up and down, they can migrate to another industry.”
