Strike Cancels Flights in Germany

FRANKFURT - Today, hundreds of flights are canceled in Germany, after government workers started short-term strikes, impacting airports in eight cities, ahead of a new round of wage negotiations.

Nearly 400 flights at Frankfurt airport alone were canceled after airport firefighters walked off the job, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Public-sector workers doing ground handling, security checks and other jobs were also participating in the strikes affecting flights in Munich, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hannover, Bremen, Berlin and Hamburg.

The union is looking for a six-percent pay raise for its 2-million members.
