Severe Storms Strike Parts of Central Illinois

Storms started to fire across central Illinois around 4:30 PM as a boundary pushed north. A funnel cloud was reported near Harvel in Montgomery County at 6:05 PM. A tornado warning was issued shortly after 6:30 PM for Montgomery County, as radar showed strong rotation, pointing to a possible tornado. Confirmation was received from the Raymond fire department of a tornado on the ground at 6:30 PM. The cell was a slow mover only tracking northeast at 15 mph. This storm prompted a tornado warning to be issued for southern Christian County. No damage was reported as the tornado touched down in a field. 

A storm then developed near Vandalia in Fayette County, and tracked east prompting a tornado warning to be issued for Fayette County at 6:36 PM. Radar indicated strong rotation east of Vandalia near Brownstown. A tornado warning was then issued for Effingham County at 6:46 PM, with a tornado touching down at 6:58 PM, two miles southwest of Altamont. The storm continued to track east with the final tornado warning being issued for eastern Effingham, southwestern Cumberland and southeastern Coles County. A semi truck was blown over on I-70 near Altamont and a power pole knocked down. 

Several severe thunderstorm warning were issued due to the threat of large hail and damaging winds.

Wind/ Wind Damage: 

7:04 PM: Power Pole blown down over a roadway and Semi blown over on I-70. Altamont, Effingham County

7:33 PM: Awning over gas pumps blown over and hit a car. Montrose, Effingham County

12:35 AM: 58 mph wind gust in New Holland, Logan County


11:15 PM Quarter Size Hail. Pawnee, Sangamon County

11:17 PM Nickel Size Hail. Divernon, Sangamon County

Numerous reports of Pea size hail from across the area.
