UI Non-Tenured Faculty Prep for Another Strike

URBANA -- A faculty union at the University of Illinois' Champaign-Urbana campus plans a five-day strike after contract talks with the school Wednesday ended without a settlement.

This follows what was a two-day strike last week, and a "work-in" early this week.

Shawn Gilmore, president of the Nontenure Faculty Coalition Local 6546, said union members voted "overwhelmingly" Wednesday night to authorize a five-day strike. The strike is scheduled to start Thursday with picketing beginning at 8 a.m. at the English Building.

The strike would cover remaining class days this semester, through May 4. Finals start May 6.

The union is amid contract negotiations with the university that have lasted since October 2014. The contract would be the group's first with the university. The union represents about 500 people.
