Cat To Close 5 More Factories

Peoria – Caterpillar is closing five more plants as the Illinois based heavy equipment maker reacts to slowing demand for construction and mining equipment.

Closing the factories will cut 820 jobs overall.  The plants being closed are in Newberry and Ridgeway, South Carolina, Morganton, North Carolina, Jacksonville, Florida and Oxford, Mississippi.

The Oxford plant will close in 2017.  It makes metal hose couplings and employees 240 employees.

Caterpillar will also demolish a factory building in Mossville, Illinois, to save money.

Company spokesperson Rachel Potts says severance packages will be offered.  Some employees may be offered transfers.
