U of I officials investigating appearance of hate symbols on Urbana-Champaign campus

URBANA - Officials at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have announced they are investigating reports of vandalism found in Lincoln Hall, the Armory, and Greg Hall on April 28.

In a news release from Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson and two other administrators, Building Services staff found swastikas in all three areas on Thursday.  Staff members worked with police officers to remove the offensive images within an hour of their discovery.

University officials say these instances of vandalism follow an incident where a noose was left on a table in a work area.  The employee who admitted to making the noose was subsequently fired from his position.

Police say they believe the vandalism took place between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in Lincoln Hall, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. in the Armory, and between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in Greg Hall.

If you have any information regarding this incident, you are urged to call the University of Illinois Police Department at (217) 333-1216.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
