State Senator Wants Hastert's Pension Revoked

Posted:

CHICAGO----An Illinois state senator says former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert should no longer be getting his taxpayer-funded pension from his time as a state legislator.

Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison Wednesday in a hush-money case. In court, Hastert admitted to sexually abusing teens while coaching high school wrestling in Yorkville, Illinois.

State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant sent a letter to the General Assembly Retirement System Thursday. She called Hastert a "predator who harmed the lives of innocent students" and asked that his pension of $28,000 a year be taken away.

But his pension will not be revoked, according to the man who oversees the pension system. Tim Blair says the pension will stay in place, because his crimes are unrelated to his time as legislator.

Hastert's teacher's pension has been canceled. It was $16,000. He receives a federal pension.
