Urbana Police Create Facebook page for 1988 Cold Case

Maria Caleel Maria Caleel

Urbana- A Facebook page has been created by the Urbana Police Department.  It is in remembrance of Maria Caleel.  Her murder, a cold case from 1988.  For the Past 28 years Urbana Detectives have been searching for her killer.

Here’s what happened: On March 6, 1988, Urbana Police officers were called to 305 N Lincoln, an apartment building for the report of a burglary in progress. When they arrived officers discovered Maria Caleel lying in the third-floor hallway. She had been stabbed once. Caleel was immediately transported to Carle Hospital, where extensive efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.

Then began the homicide investigation.  Several local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, have been involved over the past 28 years. Urbana police in a news release say hundreds of interviews have been conducted, hundreds of evidence exhibits have been recovered and preserved, and thousands of leads have been investigated. But still no arrests.

There is progress in this cold case.  Over the past two weeks, Urbana Police Sergeant Matt Rivers and Urbana Police Officer Mike Cervantes have worked on the case full-time. Even now they say more new leads have been developed. As a result of advancing forensic science techniques, additional evidence, some of it previously un-tested, is now undergoing forensic examination.

Sgt. Rivers and Officer Cervantes have now created a Facebook page called “Remembering Maria Caleel.”   There you can share memories of Maria, or the incident.  It’s their hope that friends and family of Maria will use this page to remember her, and that additional leads may be generated through shared memories and communication.

The address for the page is www.facebook.com/rememberingmariacaleel
