Central A&M's Mikah Maples earned a near-full scholarship to play rugby at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
Central A&M's Mikah Maples did something that is unthinkable to some athletes: she earned a scholarship in a sport she's never played.
The three-sport athlete will try her hand at rugby at Division I Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. She may not have experience on the rugby pitch, but she's following a family tradition -- her dad Greg Maples played at the University of Montana. All it took for Quinnipiac's coaches to be convinced, though, was game footage that showed a hard-nosed scrapper.
"I mean I'm not soft," Maples said with a laugh. "I play pretty rough, so I think that they just saw that and athletic ability and that really helped in my recruiting ... I wanted the feeling of being sore after a game. I think that was what I was going to miss the most and I will definitely be sore after games of rugby."
