“Swing For Homes” raising money for Habitat for Humanity

DECATUR – Decatur residents have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to host a wiffle ball tournament fundraiser, and they are inviting others to join in the fun.

This is the first “Swing for Homes” fundraiser, and organizers say they hope for it to become an annual event. Event officials hope to raise $20,000 to help fight homelessness with Habitat for Humanity and explain this cannot happen without community support.

Participants in the tournament will receive a t-shirt, and vendors will be set-up at the event for participants and spectators to purchase food and drinks.

All proceeds from the wiffle ball tournament will be given to Habitat for Humanity.

Tournament Co-Founder Zach Dilbeck says the fight against homelessness is going on right in the United States and that the community needs to do something to help.

A recent study indicates an estimated 1.6 million unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of those people, a third are members of households with children. Dilbeck points out this is a nine percent increase from 2007.

The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty states, in a recent study, that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of these children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year.

Through Habitat for Humanity, those in need are able to build decent, affordable housing with the help of dedicated volunteers.

Individual and corporate donors also provide money and materials to build these houses, but Dilbeck explains that a dip in the economy is reducing these donated funds. He says Habitat for Humanity is in need of funds, and the “Swing For Homes” fundraiser is one way to give back to this organization.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, July 16, at Borg Warner Sports Complex. Games will start at 9 AM.

Those interested in playing need to have a team of 7 to 10 players per team, with a $250 registration fee per team. The deadline to register is July 6. That deadline includes those interested in playing, donating or volunteering.
