Suspect in Champaign Shooting Has Lengthy Criminal Background

Posted: Updated:

Champaign- 18-year old Robbie Patton, the suspected gunman from Sunday morning's shooting is a name law enforcement is familiar with.

According to Champagin County State's Attorney Julia Rietz, Patton has several priors on his record. In fact, he was just paroled from prison three weeks ago.

Rietz says he was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm for a December 2015 shooting in a parking lot of a Steak and Shake on Prospect Avenue in Champaign. He pleaded guilty to the crime on April 18,2016 and was sentenced to 8 years for the crime. However, Patton was released from jail and completed a boot camp around three weeks ago, when he was put on parole.

According to Rietz, he had a criminal record as a juvenile in both Champaign and Vermilion Counties for aggravated fleeing and alluding, where he received probation.

Robbie Patton is being charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery with a fireman after he opened fire near 306 E. Green Street in Champaign, killing one and injuring four others.

Champaign County Police do believe that Robbie Patton is still in the area, and ask anyone with information about his whereabouts to please contact them at 217-351-4545.
