"Maker Fest" planned for Saturday

“Makers” from around Central Illinois are gathering in Urbana Saturday for this year’s Heartland Maker Fest.

Organizers of the event describe makers as “anyone who likes to make things … arts, crafts, engineering, music science, technology” and others; they aim to inspire, empower and connect makers. The event comes amid growing interest in a “maker movement.”  This year’s event features a diverse group that works with everything from rockets and lighting to origami and painting.

Among those who plan to attend the event this year is fashion designer Ja Nelle Pleasure, who has attended in years past.

“They really want to inspire people to think outside the box,” Pleasure said. “They want to empower them, and they want to connect them with other people who are like-minded and to spread the word out.”

The event is being held Saturday at the Lincoln Square Mall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
