Toastmasters to gather in Decatur

Toastmasters, a group that helps members improve public speaking and leadership skills, is holding its fall district conference in Decatur this weekend.

The event, which is being held Friday and Saturday at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel, includes education sessions on speaking and leadership, organizers said. It also features toastmasters International Director Magnus Jansson.

They compare public speaking with skydiving, and most people have an extreme fear of skydiving,” Jansson said. “I did it myself 72 times, and it's the same thing as public speaking, because the first time you get up you have the butterflies, the second time not so much, not so much, and eventually you get to the point where yes, you're still concerned and nervous, but you're in control of your butterflies."

Jansson said visitors are welcome to attend the conference.
