RANTOUL – The Rantoul Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own today.

K9 Nautic was laid to rest Sunday, October 2, after fighting an ongoing illness, according to Rantoul Police.

The police canine began his service with Rantoul Police on September 10, 2007. Authorities say he served the community with “eagerness and pride.” K9 Nautic was trained in detecting narcotics, tracking subjects and patrol work. They say he was responsible for many arrests and the seizure of countless numbers of narcotics.

His primary handler during his career was Officer Kyle Donovan.

“Our thoughts are with Officer Donovan and his family as they cope with his death,” the Rantoul Police Department said in a statement released Monday.
