ATLANTA -- He turned around the Atlanta Braves' season - as much as could be reasonably expected - and Tuesday Brian Snitker was rewarded with a new contract.

Snitker is a Macon native and former catcher on the storied 1971 Macon Ironmen baseball team featured in the book "One Shot at Forever."

The 61-year-old was named interim manager for the Braves on May 17, after former skipper Fredi Gonzalez was fired following an abysmal 9-29 start for Atlanta.

The Braves were 37-35 after the All-Star break, and finish the season on a stretch in which they went 20-10. They finished 68-93 overall.

The Braves also interviewed former managers Bud Black and Ron Washington for the position.

Snitker was not given much long-term security. He was hired only for the 2017 season with a club option for 2018.
