MTD offering free rides to polls in Champaign-Urbana area

Posted: Updated:

CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District will be providing free rides to polling places during the General Election on November 8.

From 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM, riders can get a ride to vote free of charge.

“Voting is a fundamental right and civic duty. MTD is offering free rides on Election Day so that everyone can have their voices heard,” MTD officials said in a statement released Monday.

Officials say public transportation is often times the only form of transportation many people have access to. They say this should not impact someone’s opportunity to vote.

Riders are reminded to be prepared and learn where their polling place is and which route(s) will take them there. MTD operators will not have this information available. MTD’s website also has an easy-to-use Trip Planner is help riders be informed about where and when they should get on the bus.

Polling place options can be found on the Champaign County Clerk’s website.

MTD ADA Paratransit customers may also receive free prearranged rides to or from their polling place between the hours of 5:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

Again, no ID, no pass and no cash is needed to ride MTD buses to polling places on November 8.
