GE Lamp Plant Announces Official Closure

Posted: Updated:

Mattoon - GE Lighting has officially announced it will close the Lamp Plant in Mattoon.

As WAND News first reported in August, employees had the option to generate ideas and other alternatives for the plant.

The company said it plans to close in August of 2017.

In a statement, the company says in the last decade, the lighting industry has seen a major pivot away from traditional lighting.  GE says Consumer demand for traditional lighting is at an all-time low and that shift has been supported by the U.S. Government phasing out incandescent bulbs.  As a result, the Mattoon Lamp Plant is operating at 60% below capacity.
