DIVERNON – A 62-year-old woman is in custody after she allegedly robbed a bank in Divernon.

The robbery happened just after 4 PM on Tuesday, October 18, at the Illini Bank on West Dodd Street.

Authorities say they were able to capture the woman, who is considered a person of interest in the robbery. According to police, she had been heading south on Interstate 55 in a van registered to a resident from Virden.

Police also say when the suspect was stopped about ten miles away in Girard, she had already changed clothes. Witnesses from the robbery told police the woman had been wearing a red, zippered sweatshirt, pink tennis shoes and wrapped a white cloth around her face to conceal her identity.

Authorities were able to recover the sweatshirt, tennis shoes and the stolen bank money from the van.

At this time, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office says they will not be releasing the woman’s name as she is only a person of interest, and the investigation is ongoing.
