Abraham Lincoln purchased the home on 7th Street in 1844 for $1,500. From 1846 to 1859 Lincoln remodeled the home five times with the home being made a full two stories. Abraham and Mary raised their sons in the home before going to Washington in
1860. In 1887 Robert Lincoln deeded the home to the State of Illinois stating that the home shall be kept in good repair and free access to the public. Lincoln’s home was placed on the National Historic Site registry in 1972.
